Biblical Leadership Qualities

From Sylvia Gunter - Biblical Leadership Qualities

God desires for righteous men and women to rule. His desire extends to all nations and election cycles. All leaders are and have always been under the scrutiny of our holy God. The challenges in the days ahead will require God-molded and God-directed leadership. Pray for all whom God chooses and enables to lead in every context.

 HELP US GO GREEN

The Lord is calling a people who: ”will not keep silent and will not be quiet until (America's) righteousness goes forth as brightness and her salvation as a burning torch. The nations shall see your righteousness and all kings your glory” Isaiah 62:1-2 ESV

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Welcome and thank you for your interest in leadership in the NGPT. Here are examples of what State Prayer Leaders do.

State Prayer Leaders are encouraged to reach out to their Governor's office and other major leaders in their state in the hopes of creating a relationship to better intercede for that leader. The depth of this relationship is up to the leader and the State Prayer Leader and ultimately the desires of the Holy Spirit. See what the Lord had me doing as I explain in the how this ministry began later on this page.

The Nuts & Bolts of it.
State Prayer Leaders hold weekly one hour statewide prayer conference calls and where possible also participate in a one hour national prayer call weekly. As a State Prayer Leader you are encouraged to invite guest Prayer Leaders from the various Prayer Ministries across your state to guest lead during your statewide prayer call (Every joint has something to supply) for three of the four weeks each month. Each guest Prayer Leader is encouraged to invite those from their networks to participate in the call as well. This offers the cross pollination of prayer focuses and resources as well as confirmation for those when they hear from the Lord. On the fourth week you would lead inviting all those who participated in the previous weeks to join.

Developing Roots

Understand that the following is done over time and is accomplished by the Lord not you. Simply share the instruction given by God in His word of 1Tim 2:1-6 within your expanding sphere of influence and the following comes in His timing: Organizing a blanket of prayer in your state. Your conference call will accomplish much in this effort though State Prayer Leaders are also encouraged to raise up a team to help them in this effort. Your team would include State Regional Prayer leaders who can aid in the effort of developing County (Borough or Parish) Prayer leaders in your state. County Prayer Leaders are then encouraged to raise up City and Town Prayer leaders and so on. Each holds similar conference calls or small groups of prayer lifting up all those in authority. This may also be accomplished by coming along side existing networks and sharing and willing resources.

Extras

Nationally we are also very supportive of any Special Projects and programs developed by our State Prayer Leaders. That would include things like prayer gatherings or prayer walks or other special means of mobilizing prayer.

Service

This is about an 8 hour a week commitment for those not already involved in networking or prayer mobilization or leading others to pray. One to two of those hours are spent on prayer calls and the rest is time used networking with the body, preparing for a special outreach or prayer focus like the ones I mentioned above or however the Sprit moves YOU.

Review:

  1. State Prayer Leaders are encouraged to reach out to their Governor's office and other major leaders in their state in the hope of creating a relationship to better intercede for the leader.
  2. State Prayer Leaders hold weekly one hour statewide prayer conference calls and where possible also participate in a one hour national prayer call weekly.
  3. This is about an 8 hour a week commitment for those not already involved in networking or prayer mobilization or leading others to pray.

Through these efforts we encourage networks of prayer in all of our nation’s 3,140 counties, establishing leaders of prayer and centering in on a 1 Tim 2:1-6 focus of intercession. We have our own private social networking site www.NGPT.org that provides a safe and secure environment for intercessors and leaders of prayer to some together and support one another.

Combining existing efforts

In our search for statewide ministry leadership we have been blessed to run across existing ministries and ministry leaders on a similar path and focus to our own and we have been honored to come alongside them in our ministry efforts. Some good examples of this are WI, IL, and OR. In Wisconsin we have Steven Springer of www.AdvanceK.com an IHOP affiliate. In Illinois there are Pastors Stan and Delbra Pratt. They have a church and also lead as IL State Leaders in the National Day of Prayer. In Oregon we have Pastor Aaron Auer of www.RoarOregon.org.. Some of the ministries we have come in contact with have felt isolated and alone in their efforts and in coming along side us have found a network of like thinkers. Still others have simply had a mantle for bringing different prayer groups together and want to expand their ministry efforts.

Rev. Walker explains how this ministry began:

I had been a part of the prayer mobilization movement for 16 years. I started out as an event coordinator for the National Day of Prayer Task Force in Western PA (Erie). Five years later when I moved to the Indianapolis area I accepted the role of Indiana State Coordinator, a position I am humbled to still lead in today. For these 16+ years my personal prayer focus has been based around 1Timothy 2:1-6. As I spent two sessions ministering to the Indiana State Assembly establishing bible studies and outreach to leaders and staffers, the Lord stirred in me the specific approach to praying for leaders and all those in authority.

To begin at a common focal point in the mind’s eye, at first it appeared as a lightning rod like a push pin on the top of the Statehouse dome… the Governor I thought. Then to an expanding map view where I could look down into the in the towns and neighborhoods as the intercessors prayed for those leaders geographically closest to them. As they applied feet to their prayers by taking action in the form of simple acts of kindness, prayer meetings, home bible study groups and so on the depth of the roots of these efforts took a deeper hold.

As I shared this vision and posed the question "who do you think of first in your state in leadership" the response over and again was "governor". It seemed clear the Lord was telling me something and this was confirming it.

Months later (Nov. 2004) a new Governor was elected to our state and I received a call from one of his staff simply asking if I was the guy or if I knew someone who could offer an ongoing prayer covering for the Governor. We all met later to establish a relationship and to actually continue something that had already begun for him just as we had done for the previous office holder.

Just weeks later we experienced the unexpected. While our Governor and his staff were attending the National Governors’ Conference someone on his staff had shared with the other Governors’ staffers that a prayer team had been established for them. They told of the blessings that the prayer team’s intercession had brought to them and to their state. How an energizing bible study was bringing them revelation. The surprise came later that same day when our office phone began to ring with requests for similar teams in other states. Admittedly I found myself feeling a bit reluctant about being in the midst of a nationwide ministry being born in front of my very eyes. I was simply trying to do the right thing for my state and its leaders. This website that you are reading from stands as a testimony as to what transpired that day and has since followed.

Consider joining this cause that is simply driven by God's instruction on worship found in 1 Tim 2:1-6.

1 Timothy 2:1-6

Instructions on Worship

1I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time.
May the Lord Bless you and all those you love,

Thomas C. Walker Founder & President - National Governors' Prayer Team
